Large Public Service Vehicles include vehicles with capacity to carry more than eight passengers for reward – normally buses and coaches. The Department has responsibility for policy oversight for the sector, and in particular:
- the licensing framework for LPSVs administered by An Garda Síochána(link is external)
- the licensing framework for Road Passenger Transport Operators Licences administered by the Department’s Road Transport Operator Licensing Division (link is external)
- the policy framework for the operation of bus services for hire and reward including the licensing of scheduled services administered by the National Transport Authority(link is external).
Regulation (EU) 181/2011(link is external) – concerning the rights of passengers in bus and coach transport – became applicable on 1 March 2013. It provides for a minimum set of rights for passengers travelling by bus and coach services within the European Union.
